We are living in a country where our Media and justice system are extremely poor, youngsters are indulging in a certain drug namely Nyaope . Nyaope is a cocktail of, among other things, rat poison, dagga, heroin and antiretroviral medication. It is mainly used by teenagers. It appeared around 2007 on the streets of the Tshwane townships of Soshanguve, Atteridgeville and Mamelodi. This drug is causing crime In South Africa, it is cheap and easily accessible. Not long ago Two women were found in Pretoria selling Nyaope in Primary schools.
· My question is What is the media doing about this?
· And why is our justice system so very poor?
· what are we doing as the citizens of South Africa doing about this?
I have noticed that the community members usually know the people who sell this drug but they never go and report to the police simply because they are afraid to be killed., even if they go to the police that is not going to help because they do arrest the sellers of these drug and later release them. We are no longer safe walking in the streets because we might be robbed our bags or even killed because these people are heartless. As for the Media it acts as a promotion tool for the usage of drugs it makes it appear as if it is “cool” to use drugs. Instead there should be documentaries that are teaching the youth about the Dangers of drugs, how to behave at rehabs and where to seek help.

Its so true girl,I was also robbed last year by one of the nyaope boys, its so sad seeing the people you grew up with engaging in such substance.
ReplyDeleteTrue drugs r rili take over our youths lives they end up dead or on the streets and end up resorting to crime.
ReplyDeleteWe live in a society that is being distroyed slowly but surely.
ReplyDeleteladies but what is the government doing about this? why are they releasing the people who see this drug because they are killing the society
ReplyDeleteThe government should do something about this issue of nyaope because it is slowly destroying the future of this country.I am so glad you are raising this issue to the masses out there.
ReplyDeleteI think this nyaope problem problem is bigger than the government. As society we should stand together to eradicate this problem
ReplyDeleteComing from Pretoria I can tell you that not only is the drug destroying the people that use it, but it also poses a threat to the lives of the people around the Pretoria communities. What seems to be trending within Pretoria townships is that you find taxi owners that use Nyaope addicts as a cheap labour force. One of the effects of the drug is that addicts cannot go a for up to 6 hours or more without taking the drug, so twice a day when getting in a taxi from town to Sosha or Pheli you're most likely to get in a taxi with a driver intoxicated on the drug. I once had a case where I was in a taxi to the township from town, most of the trip the driver was half asleep, we skipped a red robot on one of the BUSSEST intersections in Pretoria during rush hour, DF Milan and church street. If it hadn't been for the other cautious drivers the taxi would have had an accident.
ReplyDeleteI think people have given up trying to solve this issue. If you find that some police officers actually work with these thugs who sell drugs and actually warn them if other police officials are coming to raid and search. So many people have lost faith in the justice system (including me) because like you said, they arrest the drug sellers and then in a day or two they are walking free in the streets.
ReplyDeleteNyaope is a very dangerous drug, i sometimes ask myself who started with it because it is destroying people's future especially the young generation
ReplyDeleteTo think that there is absolutely nothing cool about using drugs because clearly its ruining peoples lives. it ruins the druggie and the people around that person. This is a fast growing problem and something needs to be done very soon.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that certain things will forever be a part of our society, if only we could come together to combat this thing. I just think as long as there are certain "role models" portraying the good side of this "Cocktail" the more people are going to continue using it.
ReplyDeleteI so agree with all of you I wonder where is this Country going?
ReplyDeleteI also dont know where our counry is going.
